Planning the User Interface
For Outpost 2, as I usually do for any other game or website, I start the UI work by sketches, as it is a quick way to solidify the vision and “proof-test” it early. While I try to avoid boxing myself early, as actually designing the product always trigger new ideas, or better ways to arrange elements, the sketches are helpful to start defining the common elements that will drive the whole UI. Sketching also forces me to insist on the concept behind the UI, and not rely purely on execution.
Here is an example of the original UI sketch, and the equivalent render of the same UI once designed. As you’ll see, while there are definitely some variations between the sketch and the final UI,the result isn’t that far off from the original vision
